A couple days after we got back from vacation Brandon had his 6th grade orientation at Dulles Middle School. First he got his schedule and locker assignment, and was pretty excited that he got the elective that he wanted (art) and the PE class he wanted (KickStart martial arts). Then he got a stack of books flopped in his arms and got to make his way up to the 6th grade hallway. As you can see, Brandon got an upper tier locker and had to get creative in trying to reach the lock. He still couldn't see the top of the dial, though. We ran into a friend, though and she's so tall, she needed a top locker and was more than willing to trade Brandon her bottom locker. The school secretary was more than happy to have one locker issue resolved quickly, so that is at least one less issue for Brandon to worry about on the first day. We walked his route to his classes a couple times, but he's still pretty nervous.
Jacob was initially excited about his back to school night, until we got in there and he learned they moved them to a new room. He has the same teacher this year (Ms. Francis, she's awesome!), and she decroated the room with animals with Jacob in mind. The little boy that he has had every year since he was 3 is at a new school this year, but there's still a few of his classmates from last year, including one who loves Barney with equal ferver. Jacob explored the room, looking high and low (and in every cabinet) for the videos, but they weren't to be found (yet). A little boy from another family that was there teamed with Jacob and they went and raided the next door classroom for books, so all was well (it's another special ed class that they do a lot of things with and the teacher loves Jacob, so she didn't mind, since he apparently does it every day). I had to laugh when they told me that they "Jacob-proofed" the room. In the picture above you can see a dividing screen between the two rooms; both teachers put tables and such in front of the access points to keep Jacob from playing "elelvator" with the sliding screen.
