The boys had a first good day of school. Both were excited to come home to cupcakes as a surprise. I was less than happy that the chocolate on my fudge covered grahams melted on the 5 minute drive home from the store, but eh, that's August in Texas for you.
Jacob's handwriting is getting a little better. He did these completely on his own. He likes dot math. This spring the teachers would write a math problem on the board and turn around and find that "somebody" had solved their math problem, so they started watching and realized it was Jacob. Now he's doing it on his own, even adding the dots whenever you tell him to write numbers. This was some sort of song he was singing to himself, so I'm not sure the importance of the extra 2's. He's still loving the dry erase board, so we're going through a lot of dry erase markers. We found out completely by accident (ahem, Jacob) that you can use washable crayola markers on there as well.
Brandon initially had a little trouble acclimating to 5th grade. They eat lunch a lot later (12:30) than he's used to, have to carry their books, and have 4 teachers instead of 2. He's doing ok. He says he likes his teachers. It took a couple days of experimenting with breakfast to figure out exactly how much he had to eat in order to last until lunch time (a big bowl of cheerios and either 2 tubs of pudding or a dozen cheese cracker sandwiches).
Jacob has started mimicing his videos. It started with a Barney video set at a farm with a rooster crowing in the morning. Jacob's rooster sounds like someone is strangling it to death, but he tries. Then it was Wags the Dogs from Wiggles. He just loves howling along with that one. I'm not sure, but I think that the dogs in the neighborhood can hear him. Now? Well, we let him use the remainder of his birthday money to get another copy of the infamous Percy's Chocolate Crunch, his very favorite dvd in the world. His favorite because it contains the screaming opera singer episode from earlier this spring. As soon as the video starts, he says "Hi, I'm Percy" just before Percy does, and when the opera singer screams at the mouse, Jacob does a (much quieter) squeal, too. He's getting better at actually watching whole videos, instead of the same parts over and over again, so that's kind of nice.
